What is paintless dent repair?

Paintless dent repair is a process where small dents caused by car doors, shopping carts or other objects hitting the body of a care are removed.  The process of removing the dents entails using tools with various tips on them to massage the dents out from the backside of the metal skin. This is done without damaging the painted surface so the need for traditional body-shop work is avoided.

What is the demand for the service?

The demand is strong and growing as people with upscale vehicles want to keep their investments in top shape.  Since the process can be done much quicker and cheaper than traditional body-shop methods, it is more readily accepted.

What is needed to start-up?

The key here is both the tools and training.  Realistically, expect training to take from one week to several months. Although a person may develop the basic skills to perform paintless dent repair in a short time, mastering it will require constant and long term practicing. This investment in time and effort is rewarded by a commensurate amount of compensation.

Start-up costs:

Costs very widely from under $1,000 to $5,000.  The full compliment of tools required to do paintless dent repair consists not only of the actual dent tools, but a drill, lights or panels used to "read" the dents, tools to hold doors, hoods and other body parts while they are being worked on and many smaller accessories. Beyond the tools, a vehicle capable of carrying them will be needed.

Overall Assessment:
Demand is strong and few people are able to provide the level of work the market demands.  Mastering this process will take time and effort.  If a person is willing to make the commitment of investing and training, he will be rewarded with a high return on investment.
